- 1). Park your truck on flat, level ground and turn the engine on. Shut off any accessories or equipment.
- 2). Chock the wheels of the vehicle. Put the transmission in "Neutral" if you have a manual transmission or "Park" if you have an automatic transmission, and apply the emergency brake.
- 3). Exit your truck with the emergency brake firmly engaged. Open the hood and engage the warm idle speed option on the power-train control module located next to the engine.
- 4). Connect the timing light to the battery by first placing a red clip on the positive terminal and a black clip on the negative terminal. Connect the timing light clamps to the "No. 1" spark plug wire and shine the timing light on the main crankshaft pulley.
- 5). Check where the timing mark falls on the pulley compared to the degree tab on the front of the engine. If the ignition timing is at five degrees before top dead center, the procedure is complete. If not, go on to the next step.
- 6). Find the distributor lock-down bolt at the base of the distributor housing and loosen it with a wrench. Disconnect the distributor vacuum hose from the distributor housing and plug it into the electronic spark computer. Ground the ignition timing adjustment connector with wires or jumper cables.
- 7). Rotate the distributor with your hand until the timing mark on the pulley aligns with the degree tab on the front of the engine to equal five degrees.
- 8). Unplug the distributor vacuum hose from the electronic spark computer and connect it back into the distributor housing. Tighten the distributor lock-down bolt with the wrench and remove the jumper cables from the ignition timing adjustment connector.
- 9). Remove the timing light from the battery and spark plug wire, disengage the warm idle speed option and close the hood. Turn off the engine and remove the wheel chocks.
