Families in need of assistance can apply for one of Kentucky's many welfare programs. The programs are designed to give families the help they need to get on their feet. Families can receive assistance with purchasing food, child care and medical costs. Participation in the program is time-limited and requirements must be met. - The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Kentucky provides low-income families with food stamps. Food stamps can be used to purchase meat, dairy products and other food essentials. To qualify, a family must meet income and citizenship requirements. The program also takes into account a family's assets, including property and vehicles owned.

chfs.ky.gov - The Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) helps working parents cover the cost of child care. The program is also open to parents who are enrolled in school or in a training program. Parents who participate in Kentucky's Temporary Assistance program may also qualify for the CCAP. Qualified applicants must meet income and citizenship requirements to participate in the program.

chfs.ky.gov - Kentucky offers medical assistance to low-income families to cover medical expenses. Medical assistance can be used to cover the cost of prescription drugs, doctor visits and hospital stays. Children from low-income families can be placed on the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIPS). Parents may be required to pay a reduced premium for a child enrolled in CHIPS. Pregnant women and parents of minor children can apply for the Medicaid program. Participants in the medical assistance programs are required meet certain requirements to continue their health plans.
