How to Figure the Ratio Between HDL & LDL

104 33
    • 1). Schedule a lipid profile test with your doctor. This is usually a blood test which your doctor may perform in the office or refer you to a testing facility.

    • 2). Prepare for the test. The testing facility or your doctor will instruct you on how to prepare. You will probably have to fast for about 12 hours.

    • 3). Provide a blood sample. A health care professional will send your blood for testing. Your doctor's office will inform you when the results are ready.

    • 4). Locate your HDL and LDL levels on your lipid profile. These values should be measured in the same units, usually milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood. Divide the HDL level by the LDL level to obtain the HDL/LDL ratio.

    • 5). Interpret the HDL/LDL ratio. It should be above 0.3; an HDL/LDL ratio above 0.4 is ideal.
