How do I Prepare Bankruptcy Schedule J?
- 1). Obtain form B6J from the U.S. Courts website. Fill in your name, and if you know the case number, fill in the case number. Check the box if a joint petition is being filed, and your spouse maintains a separate household.
- 2). Estimate your and your family's average monthly expenses at the time the case is filed. Prorate any payments made bi-weeky, quarterly, semi-annually or annually to show a monthly rate. Fill in your monthly expenses for each of the following categories:
Rent or home mortgage payment; utilities; home maintenance; food; clothing; laundry and dry cleaning; medical and dental expenses; transportation (not including car payments); recreation, clubs and entertainment, newspapers, magazines, etc.; charitable contributions; insurance that is not deducted from wages or included in home mortgage payments; taxes that are not deducted from wages or included in home mortgage payments; installment payments; alimony, maintenance and support paid to others; payments for support of additional dependents not living at your home; regular expenses from operation of business, profession or farm (attach a detailed statement); and other expenses. - 3). Add the expenses from the above categories, lines 1 through 17, to come up with Average Monthly Expenses.
- 4). Disclose any reasonably anticipated increase or decrease to occur within the next year.
- 5). Deduct average monthly expenses from Average Monthly Income of Line 15 on Schedule I to come up with a Statement of Monthly Net Income.
