    • 1). Look at soil test results to find out how much lime should be applied to your lawn. It is usually prescribed as the amount needed per 1000 square feet. You will need to measure the length of your lawn and multiply it by the width of the lawn in feet to get the total square feet. For example, if you lawn is 50 feet by 100 feet then 50 x 100 is 5000 square feet or the total square feet of the lawn. If the soil test says you need 3 lbs. per 1000 square feet then you need to add 15 lbs. over the entire lawn.

    • 2). Spread the powdered lime using a drop type spreader. The instructions on the spreader and on the package of powdered lime will tell you what setting to use to spread the powdered lime at the correct rate. A drop type spreader will deposit the lime in a uniform fashion as it is pushed across the lawn. You will be able to see exactly where the lime is placed and the lime will not be thrown into the flower beds or driveways.

    • 3). After making the first pass with the spreader, make the next pass with the wheel 2 inches inside where the lime was deposited on the first pass. This should give you an exact application rate without overlap.

    • 4). Water lime into soil, making sure that all powdered lime is washed off the grass leaves.
