- 1). Examine your current gas bill for usage fees. You have to first understand the current fees your gas company charges before calculating your costs. For discussion purposes only, your gas charge could be $2.34 per 100 cubic feet of gas (or ccf) supplied.
- 2). Locate your usage amount on your bill. If you have used 300ccf then you multiply the $2.34 by 300 and receive a cost of $702 for that month.
- 3). Examine your electric bill for fees by the electricity company. Your current rate could be $.073 per kilowatt. If your consumption was 100 kilowatts then you can expect a charge of $7.30. Keep in mind this is only the heating portion of your bill, not the entire electricity bill you can expect to see each month.
- 4). Calculate the gas usage of your furnace if you cannot separate it from the entire home gas bill. This can be tricky if you are working with an older model, however, new models should still have their installation stickers and owner manuals readily available for review. Simply look through your documents and find the information that lists the average amount of ccf or kilowatts required to maintain a specific degree within a specified amount of square feet. This will tell you how many units to multiply by the usage fees.
