- 1). Examine the traditional color code for telephone wiring. This scheme uses green wire for the tip on line 1 and red wire for the ring on line 1. Line 2 uses black for the tip and yellow for the ring. Line 3 in older telephone wiring uses white wire for the tip and blue wire for the ring.
- 2). Study the back of the telephone jack. The socket on a standard telephone jack contains up to three pairs of gold pins. A wire connects each pin to a different terminal on the back of the telephone jack.
- 3). Strip 1/4 inch of the insulation from the end of each telephone wire with a pair of wire strippers. Remove the screws from all of the terminals with a screwdriver.
- 4). Wrap the bare end of each wire around a separate terminal screw. Tighten each screw into the terminal connected to the wire with the corresponding color. For example, fasten the screw with the black wire wrapped around it to the terminal with the black wire connected to it. Fasten the screw with the white wire wrapped around it to the terminal with the white wire connected to it.
- 5). Hold the telephone jack against the wall so that the screw holes in the jack align with the screw holes on the telephone outlet. Place the screws for the telephone jack into the screw holes. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver to fasten the telephone jack to the wall.
