How to Donate Used Instruments
- 1). Search the Internet to find one of the many programs that accepts donations of gently used musical instruments. Some programs will accept instruments and refurbish them for further use. Others will accept the donation and then sell the instrument to generate money to help people in need. They may have restrictions on the types of instruments accepted. For example: no pianos, accordions or guitars.
- 2). Contact local school music programs. Many schools will accept donations of instruments in good working order. Schools in low-income areas sometimes solicit donations.
- 3). Contact a local music school. Ask if they are aware of any students in need of a particular instrument. This is one way to ensure that your instrument goes to someone who will appreciate it.
- 4). Select a recipient for your donation. Gather the appropriate documentation regarding ownership of the instrument and any applicable tax forms. You will need this if you plan to use the donation as a tax deduction.
