How to Clean the Inside of a Meat Grinder
- 1). Unplug the meat grinder, if it's electric. Manual meat grinders usually clamp to a surface and have a large handle that turns an inner cutting blade, while electric meat grinders are usually anchored by a motor that does the work for you. Since the parts that come into contact with the meat are similar in an electric and manual grinder, the basic cleaning technique is the same.
- 2). Disassemble the meat grinder by removing the rotating blade and cutting plate from the part of the grinder the meat is pushed through, called the hopper. Separate the hopper from the handle, or from the motor for electric models. Set any electrical parts aside.
- 3). Fill a sink or basin with very hot tap water and dish soap. Submerge the hopper, rotating blade, plate and any screw rings and attachments in the soapy water. Do not submerge the motor or any other electric parts.
- 4). Scrub the parts with a cleaning brush that you've designated for cleaning the meat grinder only. Make sure there is no meat left stuck to any of the parts.
- 5). Drain the sink or basin, and rinse the parts in hot water. Lay the parts on a paper towel.
- 6). Mix a solution of 1 tablespoon of chlorine bleach to 1 gallon of water in a bucket. Add the parts to the bucket and let them soak for five to 10 minutes.
- 7). Remove the parts from the bleach solution and rinse them off in warm water. Dry each part thoroughly with a clean dish towel or paper towels.
- 8). Rub any steel or iron parts, such as the plates and blades, with a small amount of vegetable or mineral oil before storing, to prevent rust.
- 9). Clean the casing of the electric motor with a cloth dampened with all-purpose cleaner, if applicable.
- 10
Wash the grinder in soapy water and dry before every use.
