Individually, salt and vinegar are useful items in cooking and cleaning. Salt, or sodium chloride, occurs naturally in many parts of the world as a mineral. Common salt is considered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be a food additive but has many other uses as well. Vinegar is defined as a sour wine, created by fermenting alcoholic liquids, that is used as a preservative, cleaning agent or condiment.

    Uses for Salt

    • There are many practical uses for salt. For instance, pour salt in a greasy pan and wipe it clean with a paper towel, or you can pour salt directly on grease stains in materials. Scrub the salt into the stain gently and rinse before washing. You can also sprinkle salt on vomit and allow it to sit for a few minutes before wiping it up, as this will help reduce the smell. In addition, it is possible to unclog a drain by pouring salt down it and flushing it with hot water.

    Uses for Vinegar

    • Vinegar is an excellent rinsing agent. Try rinsing your hair with vinegar after washing it to remove product buildup, or use it in dish water when rinsing off plates. Vinegar mixed with water and a drop or two of dishwashing liquid creates a cleaning product that can be used on floors, porcelain and countertops. When baking, add 1 tbsp. of vinegar to pastry dough to make it flaky.

    Combined Salt and Vinegar

    • Mix vinegar, salt and hot water together to create a scrubbing agent that will eliminate bacteria and remove stains safely. You can also create a paste that is equal parts salt and vinegar and, with a soft, clean cloth, polish metals, then rinse it with cool water and dry it. Try mixing 2 tbsp. of salt with 1/2 cup of vinegar and rub it into carpet stains with a clean cloth. Allow the solution to dry and then vacuum.
