How to Fix a Split Bed Rail
- 1). Take the bed apart by removing the mattress and box spring and lifting up the broken rail to remove it. You can work with the rail attached to the bed if it doesn't come out easily.
- 2). Remove any large splinters around the split so they don't interfere with your work as you repair the rail.
- 3). Prepare an epoxy wood adhesive according to the package instructions. Depending on the adhesive, you may need to mix it or stir before using it.
- 4). Apply a line of adhesive along one side of the split. Avoid putting the adhesive too close to the edge of the split because it expands as it dries.
- 5). Press the split pieces together so they are evenly lined up. Clamp them in place using carpenter's clamps or vice grips.
- 6). Allow the adhesive to cure according to package instructions. This can take several days, depending on the adhesive.
- 7). Screw a flat, metal brace onto either side of the split using wood screws. Use a brace that has a screw hole in each end.
- 8). Install a brace on the opposite side of the rail to ensure it has enough support. Lay the brace so it points in the opposite direction as the brace on the top. This ensures the screws don't hit each other or weaken the wood.
