- 1). Hook up your propane tank to an outdoor grill or similar outdoor appliance that uses propane. Turn the tank on by turning the knob counter-clockwise. Light the appliance and let it run until it burns out. Turn the knob clockwise to close it and disconnect it from the appliance. Your tank is now empty.
- 2). Take the empty tank to your local hazardous waste facility or recycling center. Call before you go to see which facility is the proper place in your community to dispose of recyclable propane cylinders.
- 3). Alternatively, take the recyclable propane cylinder to a retailer--such as gas stations or home improvement centers--that exchanges empty cylinders for full ones for a small fee. Your tank usually does not have to be fully empty to do this. If you don't want a full one in return right then, they will give you a voucher for a new tank to use at a later date.
