How to Check Briggs Flywheel

104 3
    • 1). Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug, and secure the wire away from the tip of the spark plug.

    • 2). Loosen and remove the three bolts that secure the starter shroud onto the engine. Lift the shroud off the engine and set it aside.

    • 3). Place the hooked tip of a flywheel holder through the fins of the flywheel, wrapping the curved section of the holder around the right side of the flywheel. Hold the flywheel holder securely with your right hand, and place a clutch removal tool over the clutch with your right hand. Rotate the clutch counterclockwise, and remove it from the crankshaft. Set the clutch and both tools aside.

    • 4). Hand-tighten a flywheel knockout tool onto the threaded crankshaft. Once the knockout is hand-tightened against the flywheel, back it off one full turn from the flywheel.

    • 5). Hit the flat end of the knockout tool squarely and securely with a hammer. The flywheel should pop loose. Remove the knockout and lift the flywheel off the crankshaft.

    • 6). Inspect the flywheel for any cracks or damage. If any damage is found, replace the flywheel with a genuine Briggs & Stratton flywheel.

    • 7). Lightly sand the flywheel's magnets with fine sandpaper to remove any rust or corrosion that may inhibit the magnets. Wipe away any residue caused by the sanding.
