"A two-door rocket," according to the 1970 Car and Driver review, the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette remains the manufacturer's best-selling model year. A record 28,556 Corvettes were sold in 1968, prompted by a new body design based on the Mako Shark show car. With a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $5,787.80, this general body style would continue unchanged until 1982. - Available as either a coupe or convertible, the 1968 Corvette was 182.1 inches long, 69.2 inches wide and 47.8 inches high. Both models came with flip-up headlights. Folding down the coupe's rear window and removing the t-top roof panels transformed the car in to a semi-convertible.
- A two-passenger sports car, 1968 Corvettes were available with hidden windshield wipers, vinyl trim, molded door panels and reclining seats. Overall interior space was reduced from the previous model year. With plastic controls, build quality was considered cheap.
- Powered by either a 300 hp or 435 hp V-8 engine, 1968 Corvettes came with a three-speed automatic or four-speed manual transmission. When powered by a 435 hp engine mated to a manual transmission, the 3,605-pound sports car could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and complete a quarter mile in 13.41 seconds at 109.5 mph.
