Checklist for Basic Home Security

How safe is your home? Are you concerned about the security of your property? Even though you may live in a safe area, this does not mean you should overlook the importance of security.
There are many things you can do to make your home less of a target for thieves.
Generally speaking, a thief will target the home that is "easy money.
" If you implement several home security strategies you should be able to avoid many of the common issues that plague the majority of homes in America.
  1. The following checklist for basic home security should point you in the right direction, while easing your mind:Make sure all exterior doors have a solid cylinder lock, plus a deadbolt.
Remember this: your door is only as strong as your lock.
If you do not have the proper locks in place it does not take a lot of time and money to make a change.
  2. Are your door frames reinforced? This may not sound like a big deal, but you may think twice if somebody ever kicks your door in.
A reinforced frame is every bit as important as the right type of lock combination.
  3. Is your garage door safe? Many people spend a lot of time focusing on all the exterior doors of their home, just to overlook the garage.
The lock on your garage needs to be secure.
Along with this, make sure your security code is unique and impossible to guess.
If a thief can simply punch in a code on your garage door keypad and gain access, your home is the easiest target of all time.
  4. Outdoor lighting, especially around entrances, can go a long way in deterring burglars.
Motion lights, for example, only come on when somebody gets within a specified distance of your home.
This way, you can scare away burglars without having to leave your light on at all times.
  5. Carefully consider your landscaping.
Many people get the idea that more trees and bushes are a good thing.
After all, they are making it difficult for intruders to see what is going on from the outside.
While this is true to a certain extent, keep this in mind: more landscaping all gives thieves a place to hide.
You have to find a happy medium.
Give yourself enough cover that you are comfortable, but not so much that a potential intruder has somewhere to hide as they stalk your home.
The above points have nothing to do with home security systems.
Rather, they are things you can do on your own without spending much, if any, money.
Take the time to consider the five points above, as well as any others that can improve the overall safety and security of your home.
In addition to these points, if you can add a home security system you will be well on your way to making your home 100 percent secure.
Sometimes, it is the basic things that make the most difference.
