How to Install a Strap Pin on an Acoustic Guitar
- 1). Pick the spot for your strap pin. Usually this will be on the side of the neck heel. This is the area on the back of the guitar where the neck meets the body. Before you mark the spot, make sure that this position will enable the strap to hold the guitar securely. If you place a pin on the upper part of the guitar, the strap will easily slip off the pin, so be sure that the pin is on the bottom side of the neck heel, pointing towards the floor.
- 2). Mark your chosen spot with the scratch awl, and select your drill bit. Using a bit that is too small could lead to the wood splitting as you attempt to screw in your new strap pin, so choose a bit that is the same size as the pin screw and drill a pilot hole. The indentation you made with the awl will help you avoid having the drill bit wander as you drill, reducing the risk of damaging the guitar's finish.
- 3). Lightly wax the screw of the strap pin to minimize friction, and then slip a leather washer over the screw. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to gently screw in the strap pin. The leather washer will help protect the guitar's finish from splintering or cracking when the screw is fully tightened.
- 4). Test your handiwork by pulling on the newly installed the strap pin. If it feels firm, you're ready to go. Simply adjust your guitar strap to the desired length and slip one end over the pin on the butt of the guitar, and the other end over the newly attached strap pin.
