Elective Bilateral Oophorectomy at the Time of Hysterectomy
Conclusions
This nationwide survey reveals that approximately one third of obstetrician-gynecologists continue to favor elective BO before menopause despite ACOG’s statement against it. However, according to this survey, most gynecologists comply with ACOG’s position recommending ovarian conservation in postmenopausal women. These views are not influenced by a physician’s age, sex, location, and years in practice. A woman’s personal history of breast cancer or a family history of ovarian cancer affects a physician’s decisions to perform BO. Other factors, such as a woman’s history of osteoporosis, CVD, sexual dysfunction, and previous contraceptive use, affect their decisions less.
