How to Obtain Vital Records
- 1). Visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is a federal agency, but its website provides links to where you can obtain vital records for each state.
- 2). Click on the letter "V" on the bar across the top of the homepage. Scroll down on the next page until you find "Vital Records." The entries on this page are arranged alphabetically. Look in the middle of the page.
- 3). Click on "Vital Records." Click on the name of the state where you want to look for vital records. If you want a copy of your birth certificate, for example, click on the name of the state you were born in. If you want to find a copy of your parents' marriage license, click on the state where they were married. Vital records are kept locally.
- 4). Scroll though the types of vital records on the state page until you find the one you need. The website provides the name of the office that keeps vital records in your state, as well as its address and phone number.
