Checkmate - Chapter XIV

103 11
Robert had spent the night in the lounge adjacent to Kayn's room.
Harry arrived with coffee and a selection of breakfast squares from the cafeteria.
He also brought Albert's text messages and pictures over the week on his tour.
Albert travelled north from Naples arriving first in Anzio touring the American Military Cemetery and the Monte Casino Battleground; his second day spent touring Rome walking through the Pantheon, the Colosseum and Palatine Hill; making a special note to Robert of his photographs tossing coins in the waters at Fontanadi Trevio, reminding him of his and Alyssa's favorite movie, Roman Holiday.
His next voice message, resounded in delirious celebration in his surroundings at the Grand Hotel Bastiani in Grosseto.
Signing off Albert confirmed his plans to travel to Poggibonsi and then to Toscana, the heart of wine country.
"Robert, I don't think we are going to be able to convince Albert to leave Italy.
" "He deserves every moment of this, he is like a child sitting under the Christmas tree bursting with enthusiasm.
" From across the hall only the muted sounds of the monitors could be heard.
Kayn lay in silence listening to their sounds; attempting to recognize where he was.
His arms secured to the bed supporting the IV lines and monitor cables.
After a few minutes he realized he was in a hospital and with the décor, obviously in Italy.
Attempting to sit up, proved futile; he had been in a slumber state for over ten days and was left with little body strength.
He was unable to locate a call button so he started pulling on the probes until a few came free.
Within moments a nurse arrived asking him to lay back down.
His voice, splintering into factions, after tubes, masks and medication had detained him in silence, now could only whisper his demands to see the Doctor, ordering the nurse out of the room.
Dr.
Jarrelli who had joined Harry and Robert listened to the exchange and excused himself heading towards Kayn's room.
"Hello Mr.
Tywell, I am Dr.
Jarrelli.
" "Good day Doctor, I would appreciate knowing my medical status...
now.
" Kayn's vocal cords were raw, and in such pain he was not sure if words would form, but he would not allow himself to show any compensation to this stranger.
"Certainly Mr.
Tywell, perhaps you wish your son Robert to join us, he is across the hallway.
" "Absolutely not, I would appreciate you closing that damn door and allowing me access to my chart.
Where is Martin Graham?" "Mr.
Tywell, firstly I ask that you calm down, or I will again increase your medication.
You arrived at our clinic suffering from severe heart seizures.
We operated and inserted a pacemaker, so I suggest you stop pulling off your monitors.
" "Am I able to leave?" "Not yet Mr.
Tywell.
" "Fine, now that I am conscious I take full responsibility for my care.
Please instruct Robert he is no longer needed.
Bring a telephone into my room please.
" "Absolutely not Mr.
Tywell.
Up until now you have only been allowed family.
" "What family has seen me like this?" "Your son, Robert and your brother Harry...
" "I do not remember my authorization, on any document allowing anyone by Robert.
" "Dr.
Tywell, from this moment on no family member is allowed into my room or access to my medical care information, do you understand that?" "I certainly do Mr.
Tywell.
If you would be so kind as to inform us as to who we contact in case of any emergency?" "Yes, Martin Graham; and sir, if you would please get me a phone I will contact Mr.
Graham to advise him of this.
" "Mr.
Graham left his number, I will make sure he is contacted immediately.
" "Good, is there anything else Doctor?" "No Mr.
Tywell.
" "Close the door on your way out Doctor.
" Dr.
Jarrelli did not have to worry about relaying Kayn's wishes to his family; Robert and Harry had been standing in the hallway listening to the exchange.
"Gentlemen, please, I am sure that he is reacting from the shock of his condition.
Why don't I contact Mr.
Graham and have him visit.
Perhaps this will calm Mr.
Tywell down.
" "Thank you Dr.
Jarrelli, but you will soon learn that my father is very serious in his request.
Harry, I don't think there is anything else for us to deal with at the Clinic, is there?" "Just one matter Robert.
" Harry proceeded to Kayn's room and pushed the door open and walked in.
"Get out of here, or I will have you arrested.
" "Kayn, I have spent the last eight days in negotiations with every federal agency that you involved in your witch hunt from Australia to Italy.
The debacle you left at the Airport, is now just starting to sort itself out.
Your resignation is being called for at the International Agencies.
The only individual who has dedicated himself to your betterment for the last ten days has been your son; and for him to have had to listen to your abhorrence, your discharge, with less disposition than that used in a public auction is unpardonable.
" "No one asked either of you for your time or trouble, now leave.
" Harry turned and left the room.
He was grateful that Dr.
Jarrelli had taken Robert back to the nursing station and was now in conversation with Martin Graham distracting him from his father's room.
"Mr.
Graham is enroute to the Clinic now.
" "Dr.
Jarrelli, you have our phone numbers; I would take this as a personal favor if you would find the time to keep Robert updated.
" "My pleasure.
" David shook the Doctors hand and walked out the doors to the emergency ward.
The fresh sea air and the warmth of the mid morning sun met David as he existed the Clinic.
He and Harry decided to walk for a while and headed towards the street.
They walked past patients resting in their chairs; all looking up and smiling, happy and enjoying the sun.
"I forgot the cardinal rule Harry, to keep my armor up when around Father.
" Harry reached out and put his arm around David as they walked.
He had seen this pain before in David and in his mother's eyes.
What revulsion possessed his brother's core.
They walked in silence down the street occasionally looking down the vista admiring the brilliant colors of the streets and the vendors.
Arriving at the Clinic, Martin Graham asked to speak with Dr.
Jarrelli before seeing Kayn.
He was brought up to date with Kayn's requests that only he be admitted and all future access to his care be through Martin.
Not at all happy with these responsibilities Martin told the Doctor that he would speak with Kayn.
Kayn was given a sedative following Harry's departure.
When Martin entered his room Kayn was resting peacefully.
Martin took a chair and pulled it towards the bed.
Kayn opened his eyes and mouthed a hello.
"So good to see you awake Kayn.
The Doctor tells me that you are doing much better and should be starting therapy in the next few days.
" In a whisper Kayn told Martin to instruct the staff that he would be leaving and to make arrangement for his return to Canada.
"Kayn I will not be responsible for taking you out of the clinic in this condition.
Wait for a few days until you are at least free of all the machines and medicine.
" Martin Graham had never extended a tone to Kayn, other than his working class bourgeoisie.
Kayn looked at Martin with eyes in collapsed depths; the arrogance of Kayn's clerisy consummated, he turned his head towards the wall dismissing Martin.
"Kayn I will talk to the Doctor.
" He heard the door close behind Martin and again closed his eyes.
Harry had found a street front Gelateria shop, that he guided David towards, and were now enjoying iced melon and berry gelatos.
Thinking it was the Clinic, Harry's grabbed his phone on the first ring.
"Harry, I have been so inspired by my tour that I completely forgot to ask how you and David are doing.
Is there any news with Kayn?" "Hello Albert, you are calling at a perfect time, I will pass you to Robert.
" "Hello Albert, Harry is sharing all your messages and pictures, it looks like you have found your bliss.
" "I certainly have and I am calling to see if you and Harry can get away and join me; I am sitting in the midst of a glorious vineyard sipping a most enjoyable Brunello di Montalcino.
This trip David and our friendship, I could not have imagined, looking back a year ago.
" "Harry is right Albert, your timing is perfect, we certainly can join you and in fact will arrange to leave as soon as Harry has finished up at the Conference.
We have nothing else holding us here.
" With those words Albert did not pursue asking anything further about Kayn.
David passed the phone back to Harry who told Albert that he would call later with their plans.
