How to Replace a Fluorescent Ring Bulb Ballast

    • 1). Locate the circuit breaker or fuse that controls the power to the fixture. Cut the power.

    • 2). Remove the plastic cover from the light fixture. Exactly how this is done will vary slightly from one manufacturer to the next. However, it is usually accomplished by depressing some plastic tabs. Remove the bulb from the fixture. Some models will have a metal cover that also must be removed. This can be done by squeezing the sides of the cover and pulling it off.

    • 3). Access the wires connecting the ring bulb ballast to the main current. There are two wires that must be disconnected, a hot wire and a ground. Untwist the wing nut and disentangle the wire connections.

    • 4). Take out the ballast by removing the screws on its sides with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 5). Install the new ballast. Attach it to the fixture, replace the screws and reconnect the wires. The new ballast will have the hot and ground wires labeled, simply match black to black and white to white. Then reattach any covers and replace the bulb.

    • 6). Restore the power to the fixture by resetting the circuit breaker and and test the new light.
