Famvir: An Antiviral Drug for Treatment for Genital Herpes

105 23
Famvir or Famciclovir is an antiviral drug used for the treatment of various herpevirus infections like herpes zoster (shingles), herpes simplex virus 2 (genital herpes) and herpes labialas (cold sores). The drug is available in 125mg, 250mg and 500mg variants. Famvir is manufactured by Israel-based Teva Pharmaceuticals and marketed by pharmaceutical major Novartis. Common side effects of this drug include headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, gas, fatigue, rashes and tingling in the skin. The drug is not recommended for consumption by people below 18 years of age.

Famvir: Dosage and Precaution

Famvir works by entering the infected cells and preventing the herpes virus from reproducing. Like all other drugs, this antiviral drug should be taken after consultation with your doctor. The appropriate dosage will be prescribed by the medical advisor after considering a patient's condition and checking whether he/she is allergic to any of the contents of this drug. Famciclovir is not prescribed to patients having kidney problems or ladies who are pregnant or nursing. This drug contains lactose and people who are galactose intolerant should not take consume it. Also Famvir has not been proven effective for the first outbreak of herpes, but its consumption is recommended on the appearance of first symptoms in case of recurrent herpes outbreaks.

Another important thing is that there is no evidence that Famvir can stop the spread of herpes to others. If a person is sexually active, he/she can still pass herpes to his/her partner even while taking an antiviral drug. The best way to prevent its spread is to avoid sexual contact during an outbreak of genital herpes.

Famvir: Can Shorten or Stop Herpes Outbreak

Famvir has been found to be quite advantageous in stopping or shortening the outbreak of genital herpes in patients. While a large percentage of people suffer from herpes, they witness only mild or no symptoms at all and thus are not even aware of their infection. The most common symptoms of herpes are sores around the vagina or on the penis or near the anus. These sores are sometimes also visible on the scrotum, buttocks or thighs and generally start as rashes before turning into blisters. An initial outbreak of herpes generally lasts ten to twenty days while a recurrent outbreak may last for about ten days.

While episodic treatment is recommended for people having less than six outbreaks every year, suppressive treatment or continuous daily treatment is ideal for people having six or more outbreaks of genital herpes every year. Single-Day Famvir has been found to be quite effective in stopping or shortening a recurrent herpes outbreak if taken at the first sign or symptom of this disease. However, the effectiveness of this antiviral is not established if the treatment is started more than six hours after the onset of the symptoms. Famvir is also used for the suppressive treatment of herpes and needs to be taken everyday for up to one year. The prescribed dosage will be decided by the doctor after learning about lifestyle, the pain and the severity of the patient's symptoms and the frequency of the outbreaks.
