- 1). Buy a poster featuring a printed list of the Ten Commandments. Look for one with a colorful background that will appeal to second-grade children. Find Ten Commandment posters at Christian stores. Display the poster on a wall, at child's-eye level. Place it in an accessible spot, so you can refer to it as you teach.
- 2). Print individual numbers, one through ten, onto pieces of white card-stock. The Garden of Praise website has a set of free, down-loadable numbers complete with illustrations that represent each commandment.
- 3). Begin teaching the First Commandment to second graders. Recite the commandment and explain its meaning. Hold up the first picture card so the children will associate the commandment with its place on the list. Discuss the commandment. Ask the children to brainstorm ideas to apply the teaching to second-grade life. Share how you apply the commandment to your life.
- 4). Teach each commandment in order, reciting and explaining it first, then associating it with the numbered card. Point to and read each commandment on the poster. Discuss ways children and adults can apply each commandment to daily life.
- 5). Prepare supplies for a Ten Commandments take-home project. Type, then print a copy of the Ten Commandments on regular printer paper for each second grader. Give each child two 8 by 10-inch sheets of gray construction paper and a pair of scissors.
- 6). Ask the children to round the top corners of the gray construction paper with scissors, to resemble a stone tablet. Instruct the children to cut each commandment from the white paper. Pass glue sticks. Tell youngsters to glue the first five commandments to one of the gray papers. Place the First Commandment at the top of the paper. Glue the next four in a row beneath it.
- 7). Glue the remaining commandments to the second sheet of gray construction paper. Glue the Fifth Commandment at the top. Glue the last four in a row beneath it.
- 8). Send home the Ten Commandments project with the children. Encourage second graders to read and discuss each commandment with family members.
