How to Make a PVC Drop Trap for a Feral Cat

    • 1). Prepare your staging area. The best place for your trap is the place where you consistently see the feral cat. Leave food in this spot for several nights in a row, to train the cat that he should go to that spot instead of any other. Use cat food, fresh or lunch meat, seafood or cheese.

    • 2). Prepare your trap. Screw an eye hook into the flat side of the box, so that the hook hangs down inside the box, from what will be the roof. Make sure that your box is large enough to easily accommodate the cat, with plenty of extra space left over. If the box is too small the cat won't be able to get inside and trigger the trap. The box should also be big enough that the cat will have to stand on his hind legs to reach the roof of the box.

    • 3). Set the trap. Lay a piece of plywood on the ground in the area where you've been leaving food. Set the box on top of the plywood. Prop one edge of the box up on a PVC pole, so that the trap has an opening. The opening should be big enough for the cat to get under the box for the bait.

    • 4). Bait the trap with lunch meat or a piece of chicken. Tie one end of the string to the bait and run the other end through the loop in the top of the box, down to the base of the PVC pipe. Pull the string until the bait is near the top of the box and tie it off at the bottom of the pipe. This lever and pulley system will pull the pipe out from under the lip of the box when the feral cat pulls the bait down.

    • 5). Secure the piece of plywood to your box as the fourth side of the box as soon as you've caught the feral cat. Carefully put the box in your car to drive the cat out of town or to a Humane Society or shelter. Remember that wild animals should be treated fairly and humanely, and given a chance to live their lives.
