How to Paint a Floor to Look Like Flagstone
- 1). Prepare the surface of the floor so it will accept paint. Clean the floor with an appropriate cleaning solution and stiff brush to remove all dirt, debris and grease. Let the floor dry completely.
- 2). Paint the base color of the floor. This should be the lightest color, and will serve as the color of the grout. Your faux flagstones may be either brown or gray. If the flagstones are going to be gray, you will need three shades of gray and the base coat will be the lightest. If the flagstones are going to be brown, you will need three shades of brown with the lightest used as the base coat.
- 3). Tear up the upholstery foam in pieces varying between 2 and 3 inches long and 9 or 10 inches wide. These pieces will become your template for the flagstones.
- 4). Mix together the light, medium and dark colored paint for your flagstones. Do not mix the paint fully, but only combine them in a paint tray and then mix them with a mixer until the colors have swirled together. Dip the foam pieces in the paint, then lift and blot off any excess paint with a rag.
- 5). Press the foam into the floor. Leave a space approximately 1 inch wide in between foam pieces, to show the color of the grout between the stones. Wait for the paint to dry.
- 6). Smooth the edges of the faux stones with a rounded paintbrush. Touch up as necessary and allow the paint to dry.
