• The function of a sump pump is to displace water from a location like a basement. They gather unwanted water and flush it outdoors.
  
  

Types of Pumps

• There are two basic types of sump pumps: upright (pedestal) pumps and submersible pumps. The difference between the two types of pumps is that submersible pumps, unlike pedestal pumps, are completely submerged under water.
  
  

Features

• Sump pumps typically employ ball floats that activate the pumping mechanism when water reaches certain levels within the sump. Check valves on sump pumps assure that water will not flow back into the sump when the pump shuts off.
  
  

Pit Specifications

• According to extension agricultural engineers at North Dakota State University, sump pits should be around two feet in diameter and hold at least 15 gallons of water. Metal or plastic liners should be placed in the sump pit. Between three and four inches of gravel should be placed at the bottom before the liner is put in place.
  
  

Alternatives

• Many consumers do not need or want to employ sump pits and pumps in their basements. During instances of flooding, a small "skimmer" pump can be fit with a garden hose and employed to remove unwanted water.
