How to Repair an Engine on a Coleman Generator
- 1). Disconnect any electrical connections from the generator to your home's fuse box.
- 2). Check the fuel level in your Coleman generator. If the fuel tank is empty, add gasoline. If the gasoline in it is six to eight months old, tilt the generator over on its side, dump the old fuel out and add new gas.
- 3). Check the primer bulb (or ball) on your Coleman generator. This is a small rubber bulb that is pressed before starting the generator to prime the motor's carburetor by transferring gas from the fuel tank to the carb. If the primer bulb is cracked, it must be changed out and replaced with a new one. Do this by using a screwdriver to pop the old assembly out. Press the new bulb into place then pop the assembly back onto the generator.
- 4). Pull the spark plug wire off of the plug with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Use a spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug. Install a new plug by hand then tighten it with the spark plug wrench and replace the plug wire.
- 5). Remove the air filter cover either by hand or with a screwdriver. Some Coleman generator air filter covers have a screw that holds the filter cover down. Lift the generator's air filter out and replace it if it is dirty.
