If you keep the card in the wallet, you will have a greater chance of losing it. When it is lost, it can end up in the wrong hands. It should be placed with all your important documents at home so that it can be easily found in case you needed it.

    • 2). Don't give out social security number to unnecessary places and people. There are places that definitely need your social security number such as your bank and legitimate government agencies. They will safeguard that number for you so there is no chance that they will purposely give it out to a third party.

    • 3). Those that ask for your social security number over the phone are definitely not legitimate. There are high chances of those callers being imposters of whatever institution that they claim to be. It is important for you to not give social security number ever on the phone when another person calls you. If you initiate the call to a bank, it is okay to give them your social security number.

    • 4). When entering your social security number online, make sure the website that you are visiting is secure. Check their security features. The bottom right corner should have a padlock and the website starts with "https" instead of "http".

    • 5). Avoid saying your social security number out loud in public. You never know who's listening to the information and your identity can be stolen when you are not careful. Identity thieves are prevalent in our society where they seek opportunity whenever they get a chance.
