How to Check the Certification of a Teacher
- 1). Check to see of the teacher has copies of proper certification. If not, proof of licensure must have been provided at time of hire. If you are an administrator, this information typically can be found in the Board Office.
- 2). Consult with the teacher to see if there is an issue with the license. In the case of a "Certificate of Eligibility", "Emergency Certificate" or "Advanced Standing" the administrator can contact the Department of Education for clarification on applicable timelines and requirements.
- 3). Visit the Department of Education website. Most states offer an online certification status site. Typically, the applicant for the teaching certificate can enter their Social Security number and then see their status. Administrators can access the same information, however, no others are permitted to use this service as it is not intended for public use.
- 4). Call the Department of Education. If unable to collect the needed information, an administrator or someone from the board office may contact the state directly for proof of teaching certification.
- 5). Research the Internet. Teachers often post online portfolios which will house accreditation, commendations, lesson plans and even scanned versions of their certificates and licenses. This is the best way to verify certification for parents as it does not involve any formal inquiry.
