Wooden CD Storage Projects
- Most music lovers eventually will find themselves in the position in which they have more CDs than they really know what to do with. Storage can be a real problem for CDs; their cases are made of plastic, but can still shatter if they are put under a lot of weight or thrown about too freely. While the cases themselves don't take up much space, you don't want them all crowding up your space. Building wooden storage pieces can be a great way to get your CDs safely stored.
- Installing simple wooden shelves on your walls, or building or purchasing a bookshelf, can be a great way to store your CDs. If you use open-ended shelves, like those you would hang on your wall, make sure you use some kind of bookend to keep the CDs from toppling off of the shelf. Depending on the size of your shelf, you may be able to place more than one row of CDs on the shelf; be sure both are supported by a bookend. You may also want to place the CDs spine up so that you can see their titles while they are sitting on the shelf.
If you build or purchase a regular bookshelf, you should have plenty of room for your CDs. Large bookshelves feature shelves that are 10 or more inches long; you can line CDs two or three deep in these shelves, and can lay another layer of CDs on top of those lines.
A potential problem with using a bookshelf to store your CDs is that you will not be able to see all of the titles. Even if you line them spine-side up, the shelf above will overshadow the CD titles. - For this project, you can either modify an existing wooden table to build a full new one. The most important component of this storage project is the drawers that will rest under the tabletop. These drawers can be as wide and long as you need them to be for your particular purposes. If you want to be able to see all of your CDs, you may want to make the drawer just wide enough to stack one CD across with the spine facing up; this way, each time you open the drawer, you will have a single line of clearly displayed titles. On the other hand, if you are looking for more permanent storage, you can make the drawers wider and deeper, so that you can stack a few rows and columns of CDs without worrying about seeing the titles.
The best thing about this project is that you can really customize it to your storage needs, and that you can add drawers to existing tables if you need even more space. The CDs will be well out of the way, but you can still display them in the drawers if need be. - Wooden storage towers are one of the most compact methods of storing CDs while still allowing them to be displayed and used when needed. These towers can be any height, and are usually just wide enough to hold a CD or DVD case. The CDs are displayed with the spine outward so that you can see the titles and simply grab the CD out of its slot when you need it. The towers fit easily into corners or small spaces next to televisions or radios.
A potential problem with using storage towers is that they will not hold very many CDs; because they an only fit one CD per slot, you can only store as many CDs as the height will allow.
