Mazda Miata Performance Specs
- First-generation (1989 through 1997) Miatas used either a 115-horsepower 1.6L or the 131-horsepower 1.8L introduced in 1994. Second-generation models (1997 through 2005) came with several upgraded versions of the 1.8L, producing between 140 and 145 horsepower. The 2004 model-year saw the introduction of a 180-horsepower turbocharged version of this engine. Third-generation Miatas (2006 through current) sold in America only come with a 180-horsepower 2.0L four cylinder.
- First-generation times, from 0 to 60, ranged from 8.8 seconds to 9.5 seconds, with 1/4-mile times between 16.3 and 17 seconds. Second-generation models were faster, with 0 to 60 in 8 seconds flat and 1/4-mile times around 16.3 seconds. Third-generation cars run about 7.5 seconds at 0 to 60 and 15 seconds flat in the 1/4-mile.
- Miatas have long been known for their impressive and flexible handling limits. First-generation models are capable of generating between 0.88 and 0.90 lateral G-forces (between 88 and 90 percent of the force of gravity pulling sideways on the driver) on a 200-foot skid pad. Second-generation cars are better, at around 0.93 Gs, and third-generation cars with Mazda's MS-R package can turn a full 1.0 Gs.
