How to Install an Electrical Dual Outlet With Four Wires
- 1). Turn off the breaker controlling the outlet being worked on. Set your voltage tester to AC volts on its highest scale. Remove the cover of the outlet being replaced.
- 2). Touch one of the tester's leads to one of the black wires or brass screws on the outlet and touch the other lead to one of the white wires or the silver screws. Verify that there are zero volts at the outlet before working on it.
- 3). Loosen the screws holding the wires to the outlet. Pull the wires off of the outlet. Install the new duplex receptacle.
- 4). Connect the two black wires to the brass screws on the outlet. Connect the two white wires to the silver screws on the outlet. Connect the bare or green wire, if there is one, to the green ground screw on the outlet. Tighten all of the screws with your screwdriver.
- 5). Push the outlet and wires into the box and be sure that the bare ground wire, if there is one, is not touching any of the other screws on the outlet. Install the cover plate for the outlet. Turn the breaker back on.
