Are you doing all that you can to keep your home safe? Home security is nothing to take lightly. These days, you can never play it too safe. Here's a look at some measures you can take to keep the bad guys out and keep your home safe.

The simplest thing you can do is to keep your windows and your doors shut and locked. This is far too often overlooked despite its being the easiest task to master. Everyone has a lock on their door which is meant to be used. This is especially important during those sultry summer months. Most homeowners are keen to leave windows and even doors open to let in some cool breezes. However, many people forget to close them when they leave or if they take a midday nap.

While we're on the subject of windows and doors, it may behoove of you, as a homeowner to think about replacements for older windows and locks. In with the new, out with the old. Thieves are an opportunistic bunch. They look for weaknesses. Older windows tend to have easy to pick or pry locks. They might not even fasten tightly. New windows will keep drafts out, lower your heating and cooling bills and they'll also deter thieves. Many new windows have catches allowing you to keep them open a few inches to let some fresh air in. So not only will you make your house more energy efficient and save money, you won't have to worry about those opportunity grabbing thieves climbing through your windows.

Older doors should be replaced as well. The frames should be secured with long screws, making it harder for thieves to force their way in. Install deadbolt locks. These have been proven to offer the best protection. There are several different types for you to choose from. Some deadbolt locks are locked with a key from the outside and a thumb turn from the inside. Others are locked with a key from both inside and out; while these are ideal for keeping thieves out, you should make sure your family members have a copy close at hand in the event of emergencies.

Keep your home well lit. Pay special attention to entrances. Motion activated lights are great for saving energy and making sure unwanted visitors stay out. Make sure you place these out of reach so they can't be tampered or interfered with. If you go out at night, keep a few lights on in your house to make it look occupied; and if you plan to be away for a few days or more, be sure to place some lights and your TV or radio on a timer.

Consider getting a home alarm system. Home alarms are proven deterrents. Home security systems vary in terms of cost, but often you can get the price deducted or discounted from your insurance.
