By now, most of us already know how diet affects our health. So, when we are diagnosed with an illness, it's automatic that we think of the foods that we eat and whether they can affect our condition. To be guided accordingly, we can consult a physician or sometimes, the physician will be the one who will suggest both the foods that you can eat and those that you should avoid. An example is a low fibre diet, which is recommended for those who suffer from diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and bowel inflammation.

When you are advised to follow a low fibre diet, you will eat foods that contain low fiber so that the stomach will be able to digest them easily to slow down bowel movements. Specifically, your aim here will be to eat about 10 to 15 grams of fiber daily. Some of the recommended foods include cooked vegetables, white breads, fruits and meats. Also, it advises you not to eat legumes, whole grains, nuts and raw fruits and vegetables.

Fortunately, the low fibre diet ensures that you will have proteins, salts, fluids and minerals required by our body. This just means that you should not worry too much when you are advised to follow this diet plan because your nutrition requirements will be answered. If you are still concerned about the minerals and vitamins that your body needs, you can take supplements, including calcium, folic acid and vitamin C especially if you will be required to adopt this specific diet plan for a long period of time.

To familiarize yourself of the foods that you can eat if you are on a low fibre diet, here they are:
  • Allowed daily servings of smooth milk products will be 2 cups and these include cottage cheese, yogurt, pudding, milk and creamy soup.
  • Choose refined white breads, crackers, white pasta and dry cereals, but you need to check the fiber and make sure that these have about 0.5 a gram of fiber per serving.
  • Selected vegetables can be eaten raw and these include cucumber, onion, zucchini and lettuce.
  • Cooked vegetables that dieters following the low fibre diet can eat include spinach, pumpkin, eggplant, green beans and yellow squash.
  • Cooked meat can also be eaten along with poultry, eggs, fish and peanut butter.
  • It is okay to eat margarine, butter, mayonnaise, smooth sauces and whipped cream.

When the physician told you that you have to follow a low fibre diet, you have to make sure that you are committed to complying with all the rules associated with this diet plan because failure to do so can risk irritating or obstructing your digestive tract. Anyway, it's for your own health, so you should follow the rules, foods that can be eaten and those that should be avoided. You will be shocked at first, but you will be able to adjust in time. Keep in mind that following rules will be harder at first but with practice, you will be able to treat it as part of your life.
