Safety Warnings on Light Bulbs
- Warning labels warning against harmful ultraviolet light are marked by a yellow triangle with a symbol resembling the sun in center. In the center of the sun, the letters "UV" indicated the bulb may emit ultraviolet light. This label is also seen as a black triangle around a white exclamation point. It precedes warnings about the hazards of ultraviolet light as well as the importance of unplugging lighting when doing maintenance work.
- Electrical shock warnings are also yellow triangles. Each triangle has a staggered, bolt-like arrow, indicating the presences of electricity. Shock warnings are also marked by a a black triangle housing a white exclamation point. It precedes "danger" and "caution" warnings about shock and proper grounding of electric lighting devices.
- Light bulbs containing mercury are required to have a distinct label on each unit. A mercury warning is easily identified by the chemical symbol for mercury, "Hg," encased in a circle. This symbol can be found on fluorescent, neon, high-intensity discharge and ultraviolet bulbs.
