Decorators have a very different job nowadays to what they once did. Today decorators are required to carry out all of the preparatory and finishing work of a job. In the past decorators would only be required to complete the painting work that was needed to be carried out. Today painters and decorators are responsible for many things that will be needed to carry out the job. These things can include buying the paint and ensuring the correct quantities are there, sometimes choosing the colour of the paint, preparing the area to be painted, smoothing out surfaces, covering up and taping areas that are to be protected, covering over ornaments and furniture to make sure they are kept safe.

Painters and Decorators can also specialise in a number of different jobs, such as fine faux finishing, gilding and gold leaf, paint effects, specialist paper hanging. Many of these jobs are things that would not have been done in the past. This is probably partly due to new methods, techniques and advances in the painting world. Most painters and decorators have had extensive training and are well experienced in the job.

Painting and Decorating is a good profession, there are many ways you can progress with your painting and decorating career. A qualified painter and decorator can work hard and become a supervisor, then maybe a manager of a company and so on, many painters and decorators choose to work on their own or even start up their own business. There are two main ways that you could start your career in the painting and decorating profession. One way is to become an apprentice, apprentices have the advantage of learning and earning at the same time. You will gain lots of experience whilst working as an apprentice and you will also gain qualifications and earn money all at the same time. Another route is by completing a college course. The course will give you all the qualifications and skills required. You will normally also carry out a number of weeks work experience whilst at college. This will help to give you the experience employers will be looking for.

The painting and decorating career is one that will always be around as people will always need their houses decorated and businesses too. The stability of the job is especially good in the current economic climate. The job also pays well which is a bonus for everyone.
