How to Store Diesel Fuel Correctly

104 29
    • 1). Store diesel fuel in permanent storage tanks. Make sure that the tanks are large enough to store your fuel and that the tanks don't have a galvanized coating because diesel fuel will dissolve this coating.

    • 2). Store your diesel fuel at room temperature when possible. Find out your fuel's cloud point, which is when the fuel develops wax crystals, not letting it pass through the storage tanks and into your machine or vehicle. Know the minimum temperature that your storage area can drop to, and make sure that you only store fuel there that has a cloud point at least 10 degrees F lower than that minimum temperature.

    • 3). Keep the tops of the storage tanks clear of dirt, debris and water. Also, make sure that the insides of the storage tanks are thoroughly cleaned before putting diesel fuel into them, especially if the tanks previously stored gasoline.

    • 4). Clean the storage tanks twice a year. Empty out all the diesel fuel and thoroughly clean the tanks. Use clean diesel fuel to rinse out loose sediment from the tanks, instructs the Grounds Maintenance website.
