We are always on the lookout for ways that we can protect ourselves from possible health hazards. At the same time, we try to find more ways to eat natural foods and improve our overall health. We are all well aware of the need to increase the amount of fruits and veggies that we eat. In fact, the USDA's food pyramid shows fruits and veggies as being only second to bread, cereal, rice and pasta as our major food source.

There is no question that organic foods offer an extra layer of protection against chemical exposure from pesticides. However, the cost of organic produce can still be cost prohibitive for so many people these days. The Environmental Working Group's website has a great list of the produce that is most commonly found to have higher levels of pesticide residue present.

This list (in order of highest levels) is also known as "The Dirty Dozen":

Apples
Celery
Sweet bell peppers
Peaches
Strawberries
Nectarines - imported
Grapes
Spinach
Lettuce
Cucumbers
Blueberries - domestic
Potatoes

The EWG's website also has a list which includes fruits and veggies that have been found to have the lowest levels of pesticide residue present.

So, while organic is best, it may not always be a realistic choice. This list will help you better determine which foods to make an extra effort to buy organic, as well as alternative choices to avoid chemical exposure.

Another great resource that can be very helpful is found on the What's On My Food.org website.

"What's On My Food? is a searchable database designed to make the public problem of pesticide exposure visible and more understandable."

Pesticide exposure is a subject that needs further research and open discussion. When it comes to our children, they can be especially susceptible to the harmful effects. Avoiding these foods, even if they are your favorites, would be wise. Check the list of those foods with the lowest traces of pesticides and focus on eating more of them instead. You might also consider a detox program to help remove any existing pesticide residue from your system.
