Are California Poppy Flowers Safe for Tortoises?

104 20

    Appearance of California Poppies

    • California poppies have parsley shaped leaves which are topped with an orange or yellow flower. The stem of California poppies tends to be a bluish green color. California poppies are pollinated by beetles or bees, and produce dark black seeds upon completion of pollination.

    Poppies as Food

    • Tortoises enjoy a variety of foods, such as mustard greens, dandelions and even worms. California poppies offer your tortoise a bit of variety in its diet and are a healthy treat for all types of tortoises.

    Healthy Tortoise Diet

    • A healthy tortoise diet is high in fiber and low in sugar. You should provide your tortoise with fresh food and allow it to eat as it pleases. Your tortoise may not enjoy eating from your hand and may prefer to eat from a small dish. If you have a free-range tortoise, plant California poppies and other healthy plants in its area so your tortoise can eat as it pleases. Some tortoises enjoy fruit as part of their diet, but other tortoises cannot handle the high sugar content of fruit. Check with your veterinarian before you offer fruit to your tortoise, or play it safe and offer green leafy plants for your pet.

    Offering New Foods

    • Tortoises naturally enjoy a variety of plants and your tortoise is probably not a picky eater. If you're worried that it may not enjoy California poppies, you can offer the poppies in conjunction with its normal meal or simply leave a few poppies around its aquarium or in its outdoor pen so it can nibble on them as it pleases.
