How to Keep Gophers & Moles Off Grass

    Trapping

    • 1). Find the mole and gopher main runways by locating the longest stretch of tunnels. These often follow fences and the busiest tunnels for gophers and moles.

    • 2). Dig out the openings of the mole or gopher mounds. Dig them wide enough to fit the traps inside.

    • 3). Place mole traps and gopher traps in several places around the main runways during the spring and fall when moles and gophers are most active. Be careful to set the traps properly as moles are good at eating the food out of improperly set traps. Trapping in the early spring may catch any pregnant females on your lawn. Set three to five traps per acre of lawn. Choose sturdy traps made of heavy wire that are designed for either gophers or moles.

    • 4). Release the moles and gophers miles from your home in a state or national forest. Do this as soon as you trap the animal.

    Killing

    • 1). Sprinkle mole and gopher poison bait around the tunnel entrances and inside some of the tunnels. This bait often smells and looks like worms. When the gophers and moles eat them they will die.

    • 2). Remove the dead bodies as throw them into a dumpster so that they don't begin to decay and smell.

    • 3). Sprinkle more poison bait until all of the moles and gophers are dead. Gophers may store the poison bait up to one week before eating it and dying.
