How to Carry a Couch

104 5
    • 1). Remove the legs. You can often do this by simply unscrewing them, but for some you may have to remove some screws with a screwdriver or wrench. Removing the legs will give the couch a smaller cross-section and make it easier to maneuver through tight spaces.

    • 2). Work with an assistant. Stand at either end of the couch and bend your legs while you work your hands under the couch. When you both have a good grip, straighten your legs together and keep your backs straight as you hoist the couch into the air. It may be easier to hold if you tilt it, but be sure you and your partner are in agreement.

    • 3). Walk forward while your assistant walks backward, or vice versa, keeping your steps in unison. When you come to a doorway, tilt the couch as needed to fit through. Stay in communication with your assistant so that you tilt it at the same time and in the same direction.

    • 4). Stop when you come to a tight corner or stairway, set the couch down and discuss your strategy. You can usually fit a couch around a corner by lifting one end until the couch is vertical, shimmying it along the floor, and setting the end back down on the floor. Keep a piece of plastic sheeting handy to put on the floor so the couch doesn't get dirty.

    • 5). Use a dolly to carry a couch upstairs. Set one end on the dolly and, while one person pulls the dolly up the stairs, the other lifts the opposite end and carries it. This method is much easier on the person on the front end of the couch and may well prevent injury.

    • 6). Keep your back straight and bend your legs whenever you set the couch down or pick it up again. Keep your arms straight while you are picking it up, setting it down or carrying it. Bending your arms requires extra strength and will quickly tire you and may cause you to pull a muscle.
