    • 1). Cut off the pair of split jacks from the Y-adapter cable using the wire cutters.

    • 2). Remove half an inch of insulation from each of the newly cut ends using the blade. This exposes the wires within. Each cable contains three wires: a black one, a red one and one that contains bare metal.

    • 3). Remove each of these exposed wires' foil coatings using the blade.

    • 4). Cut off the insulation from one cable's black wire, again using the blade. Cut the insulation from the other cable's red wire.

    • 5). Thread one cable's metal wire through the hole at the base of one of the phone jacks. Bend the wire around the base to further secure it, then solder it to the base with the soldering iron.

    • 6). Repeat Step 5 with the other cable and jack.

    • 7). Solder the stripped red wire to one of its jack's terminals. Cut off this cable's remaining exposed black wire.

    • 8). Solder the stripped black wire to one of its jack's terminals. Solder your short spare wire to the two terminals to connect them. Cut off this cable's remaining exposed red wire.

    • 9). Slide the jacks' plastic housing over them, covering your newly-connected wires.

    • 12

Plug your USB headset into the USB-to-3.5 mm adapter.
