How to Upgrade an iPhone to 4G

    • 1). Determine your eligibility for the upgrade to iPhone 4G. Call *639# from your AT&T iPhone and listen to the prompts. You may also check your upgrade eligibility by logging into your AT&T account via the link listed in the "Resources" section below.

    • 2). Visit your local AT&T store to switch out your old iPhone for a new iPhone 4G if you find you do qualify for the upgrade. You may also log in to your wireless account online and complete the upgrade using that means. As of October 2010, the upgrade fee is $18 if you agree to an add 24 months of service to your existing contract.

    • 3). Call AT&T Wireless Customer Care at 1-800-888-7600 to inquire about when you might be eligible to upgrade if you don't yet qualify. According to the "Coated" tech blog, AT&T initially offered iPhone 4G upgrades to customers who purchased an iPhone in 2009. If you're among this group but found you weren't eligible for whatever reason, it's worth contacting AT&T to ask them if there's been an error.
