Home Security and Video Surveillance
With increases in the crime rate over the last several decades it makes the thought of not locking your doors and windows seem insane.
Lots of people have opted to have a security system installed in their homes to increase their piece of mind.
Burglar alarms have been protecting homes for a while now but due to bad installation, products and customer neglect they are all but ignored by everyone including intruders.
Hearing a siren go off doesn't spur neighbors into dialing 911 unless it never shuts off.
Alarm monitoring provides greater degree of protection as when an alarm goes off a central monitoring company receives a signal and calls authorities.
Many security system owners fail to see how vulnerable they're system is because of the public apathy towards alarms.
One simple cut to your phone service cable can disable your central station monitoring.
The phone service box is often installed on the outside the house and is very vulnerable to being cut.
If the service line is cut then the home owner is at the mercy of a neighbor's willingness and availability to notify authorities.
One way of reducing this risk is to have they're service box relocated in their crawlspace.
If your house is on a slab then you can all but remove this option unless you can find a place that you would be willing to have it installed inside the living space and be willing to do the project yourself.
Having a cellular or radio backup system installed is a great option as it is installed inside the protected area and communicates wirelessly.
The chances of catching a burglar are pretty low even with a modern burglar alarm with backup communications.
By definition "alarm" is to scare or frighten.
So therefore a burglar alarm is designed to scare off intruders.
But in quite a few burglaries the homeowner will still be victim of a smash and grab where the intruder just grabs the most valuable of your possessions before they think they might get caught.
An intruder knows that most people ignore the wailing of your siren and the chances of someone being able to identify them are low so the risk verses reward is great.
But now that CCTV or video surveillance equipment is becoming affordable to the general public and isn't just for the wealthy and corporate environments any more.
It has become one of the fastest growing parts of the security industry.
Home surveillance systems are quite sophisticated with features comparable to their commercial counter parts.
With features that allow the customer to store weeks or months of video surveillance clips that can be viewed on a surveillance DVR.
Specialized security cameras allow them to be hidden as in the case with nanny cams, IR cameras allow images to be recorded in low light to total darkness, and vandal/ weather proof cameras allows these security cameras to be placed outside.
Software and internet capability allow users to access recorded and real time events from anywhere at any time.
Connection can be made from a networked computer and by today's modern cell phones.
A modern surveillance systems can also send email alerts to their owners if detects events such as alarms, custom inputs like doors, and motion detection.
Motion detection by a camera during a programmed period can also sound an alert when it sees motion to warn would be intruders they have already been detected before they even get close to your home.
Now if an intruder knows that they have already been seen the likelihood of them robbing your home is greatly reduced.
With video evidence local authorities are more likely to arrest and convict any intruder and also recover your possessions.
