How to Make Designer Valances

    • 1). Measure the width of the window where you want a valance. Buy a curtain panel wide enough to fit the window plus several inches of overhang on each side to allow for fabric bunching.

    • 2). Lay the curtain panel out and fan fold it from the bottom till it is the length that you wish to have it. A standard valance is around 22 inches.

    • 3). Cut the trim to twice the length of your valance. Add an extra two inches to make a seam. The trim should be roughly 6 inches wide, and it will be used in two places to hold up part of the valance fabric to force the valance to drape in a scalloped pattern, as sort of a vertical tieback. The trim material can be identical to the valance fabric, or some other complementary color or pattern.

    • 4). Measure inward from both ends of your curtain panel to a point one-fourth of the window length. Mark this point--it will be used for placing the decorative trim.

    • 5). Apply the iron-on seam tape to your trim pieces and seal the tape with your iron, according to the tape manufacturer's instructions. The trim should be a loop that is perpendicular to the curtain rod--the trim will hold up part of the valance fabric, forcing the rest of the fabric to fall in a scalloped pattern.

    • 6). Affix your trim pieces to the curtain areas, at the spots marked in Step 4. You should end up with the long, narrow trim pieces circling the entire valance, vertically.

    • 7). Slide your curtain panel over the curtain rod. Space the fabric to provide an even ruffle pattern, then hang the rod above the window.
