How to Make a Good Campfire
The most problems people have with starting fires is that they're not well informed and they make stupid mistakes that could lead to dangerous situations.
Learn how to avoid those situations and some great tips on how to make a superior campfire for you and your friends.
Before even attempting to make a campfire location, there are some things that you should always carry around with you.
Make sure that you always have a large amount of water with you as well as a wool blanket.
These are precautions for in case your fire gets out of hand and you need to put it out.
Now, if you're out in the wilderness, find a flat ground where you can make your campfire.
If you're on a campsite, areas are already flattened out for you with a pit already prepared, so you can skip this section.
For the people in the wild, once you find a flat area, sweep away that area to get rid of all the leaves and twigs on the floor.
If your fire throws ashes out and the leaves and twigs catch on fire, there's a good chance that it can start a forest fire.
Once you sweep the area clean, go hunting for some large rocks.
Try avoiding rocks that have been in the water for a long time like rocks from the river.
Those rocks have air pockets that, if handled without care, can explode during your fire and hurt someone.
So go hunting for dry rocks, and once you have found those, leave them to the side and start on your fire pit.
For your fire pit, take a shovel and dig out a large bowl-shaped hole in the ground.
Once you have done that, put your rocks around it in the shape of a circle or square.
The shape doesn't really matter as long as the pit is covered on all sides.
Once your pit is ready, search for your fuel, tinder and kindling.
Fuel is the biggest part of your fire; it doesn't refer to any liquid but a big log that will keep your fire going.
Kindling is smaller wood that will keep your fire up for a short time and tinder is your small stuff like twigs that will catch on fire easily.
Next, you will build your pile of wood.
You can do it any way you want, but most people make a tepee type of fire.
This method requires you to simply stack up your wood towards the middle of the camp fire.
After you build it up, take your tinder and put it in the middle of the tepee wood.
Also add some kindling inside.
Then light your tinder and watch as your wood tepee burns to life and warm you up.
Once you are done with your fire, wait until your wood is done burning and there are only small amounts of fire left or wait until it's completely burned out.
Then take your large bucket of water and slowly pour about a fourth of the water all over the fire.
Then take your shovel and push down on the ashes while mixing it a couple times.
This is the best method that I know of of putting out your fire.
Repeat this process as many times as necessary to ensure that the fire is out.
Now, cover it with sand and you can be on your way.
