How to Tell Bad Wheel Bearings
- 1). Engage your vehicle's parking brake then raise the front of the car with a jack. Place jack stands under the frame rails of the vehicle. Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires to prevent it from rolling.
- 2). Grasp one of the front tires at the bottom and top then attempt to rock the tires in and out. Any form of movement may indicate a worn wheel bearing. Repeat this for the other front tire.
- 3). Spin the tire and listen for any squeaking. Check if there is any roughness to the wheel while you turn it. This indicates that the wheel bearing may be worn and must be replaced.
- 4). Raise the front of the vehicle with the jack and slide the jack stands out from under the vehicle. Lower the car to the ground with the jack and repeat Steps 1 through 3 for the vehicle's rear.
- 5). Test-drive your car on a quiet and even road. Listen for any hints of squeaking or roughness while you travel over bumps and dips. These sounds signal worn wheel bearings.
