How to Help Children Create Stories
- 1). Listen to storytellers at libraries. Instead of having a book read to them, and pictures shown to them, the storytellertells a story and allows the children to create in their own minds how the scenes appear.
- 2). Discuss the story that the child has just heard and ask questions about how they pictured the people, or how the surroundings looked. Ask them to describe in detail their vision of the various scenes.
- 3). Have the child retell a story that was read or told to them. Encourage them to put it into their own words andto change anything that they want. Storytellers have the right to change any detail in a story and may evenadd or subtract characters and events.
- 4). Write down the stories that the child creates. Encourage the child to draw pictures to go along with the story. This helps them use their imagination and come up with a multitude of details such as colors and environments.
- 5). Encourage your child to tell stories to other children. This helps them bring all senses into the story, such ashow things look, what are the smells of the surroundings or tastes of foods, as well as any tactile feelings such as the softness or smoothness of velvet cloak or the roughness of a pauper's cloak.
