The general concept that interactions between inflammatory pathways triggered by exposure to respiratory viruses and aeroallergens play important roles in both the initiation and progression of asthma is now firmly embedded in the literature, and research into the underlying mechanisms is intensifying on a number of fronts. In particular, this work is providing new rationales for intervention in early-stage disease with the aim of halting progression to chronicity, several of which should be testable in the short-term future.
