How to Make a PVC Gate
- 1). Use a measuring tape to measure the width of the doorway you intend to block. The width of the gate you construct will not be equal to this measurement, because you will need to accommodate for the dimensions of the hanging mechanism you choose. As you consider the design for your gate, also consider how you intend to attach it to the wall.
- 2). Subtract the width of the hanging mechanism you intend to use to install the PVC gate from the width measurement you just took to determine the width of the gate itself. Subtract 2 1/2 to 3 inches from this measurement to determine the length of the horizontal support pipes for your gate.
- 3). Use PVC cutters to cut two pieces of 1-inch PVC to the final measurement you found in Step 2. Cut two more pieces of 1-inch PVC to the desired height of your gate. Standard safety gates are generally between 24 and 36 inches tall.
- 4). Arrange the four pieces of PVC in a rectangle shape with the pieces of equal size placed opposite each other. Connect the pipes at the corners using 1-inch PVC corner fittings to complete the gate frame.
- 5). Cut two pieces of plastic mesh to slightly smaller than the dimensions of the PVC gate frame. Sandwich the frame between the two pieces of mesh and secure the mesh to the frame using cable ties. Pull the cable ties as tight as possible to ensure that the mesh is snug against the PVC frame.
- 6). Cut the horizontal support pipes into smaller sections, and insert tee fittings to divide the frame as an alternative to the plastic mesh covering. Install the tee fittings at equal intervals along the top and bottom horizontal support pipes, and place a vertical pipe in between each pair of tee fittings to form bars inside the frame of the safety gate.
- 7). Mount the PVC gate in the doorway using your preferred method. For a permanent placement you may use chain-link fence hinges to hang the gate. If you want to be able to move the gate, replace the corner fittings in the gate frame with tee fittings and slide a spring-loaded curtain rod through the horizontal support pipes. Compress the rods to slide the gate into place, and release them to hold the gate in place within the doorway.
