How to Teach Little Girls to Care for Long Hair

104 1
    • 1). Practice on a doll. Show your daughter how to start at the bottom and comb out any tangles from the last inch of the doll's hair. Then move up an inch or so and comb the hair out again, slowly working her way from the bottom of the doll's hair to the top. Explain to your daughter that this is a gentle way to brush her doll's hair and her own.

    • 2). Create a hair care basket with all of the things she will need to care of her long hair. Keep a bottle of spray detangler, a comb, a brush and hair accessories in the basket. Practice using the items in the basket together so that she knows how to use them. Teach her how to spray the detangler on her hair. Watch her brush and comb her own hair and help her if she comes across any tangles.

    • 3). Teach her how to wash her own hair. Show her how much shampoo she needs to pour into her hand. Tell her to rub the shampoo into her scalp first and then the rest of her hair. Allow her to do it for herself, but help her if she misses a spot. Watch her rinse her hair out and let her know if she has suds left anywhere. As she improves at washing her own hair, involve yourself less and less in the process until she is washing her hair completely independently.

    • 4). Remind her of good habits for having long hair. She should put her hair in a ponytail or headband before doing anything messy, such as eating spaghetti or finger painting, so that her hair does not get sticky or dirty. She should comb it out before bed each night to make sure any tangles from the day do not get worse as she moves around in her sleep. Also remind her that the less she touches her hair, the prettier it will be. Touching hair makes it get dirty and messy much quicker.
